[Excerpt from Orefici #5, performed by Terry B. Ewell]
I much enjoy the beauty of a garden and in particular I have grown a vegetable garden for around 30s years. I have one of the largest vegetable gardens in my community and one of my neighbors calls me the “farmer on the circle.”
I’ve learned many spiritual things by tending my garden. For instance, it doesn't matter how much effort I put into preparing the beds, fertilizing the soil, planting and covering the seeds; if the sun doesn't come up or the rain never came, there would be no crops. I can't do it all myself. I am dependent upon forces outside myself, yes even God, in order to flourish in this life. Psalm 127 sums it up this way:
Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
(Psalm 127:1 NKJV)
I think by this time you are tired of seeing an old man play the bassoon. So, enjoy now the lovely melodies of Orefici study #17 and the beauty of my garden.
